Why we run recovery events

Most of our calendar is about moving. Classes, runs, competitions. Recovery events are the other half: nights built around slowing down, warming up, cooling off and breathing. They are smaller, quieter and, honestly, some of our favorites.

A lot of people in our community train hard all week. They don't need another workout on a Thursday night. They need an hour that resets them, ideally with people they like.

Rooted in Strength, Aurora

Our clearest example from 2026 is Rooted in Strength, on September 24 at HaloHeat Sauna Studios in Aurora, Illinois. It was an evening of recovery, mindful movement, breathwork and community connection. The poster called it a sensory self care evening, and that's about right. No scoreboard, no sprint. Just heat, breath and a room full of people doing the same thing.

It also fits our Aurora and Naperville crowd, who had their own festival at Society 57 earlier that summer.

Recovery at the festival

Every STRENGTH IN THE CITY wellness festival has recovery experiences next to the classes. You can take a class, recover, then go back for another one. At some stops that has included a cold plunge out in the open air.

At Strength en Nosotros in 2026, our Latino fitness event, a sauna session was part of the day.

What usually happens at a recovery event

Every event is a little different, but these are the pieces we tend to build around:

  • Sauna. Heat with a group. You go in, you sweat, you come out and sit for a bit. Repeat if you like.
  • Breathwork. A guided session where someone talks you through slower, deeper breathing. It sounds simple, and it is. That's why it works.
  • Mindful movement. Gentle stretching and mobility, done slowly, the kind of thing that feels good after a long week of lifting or running.
  • Community time. The part between sessions where people just talk.

Who it's for

Anyone, really. If you train a lot, recovery events give your body a break without you having to stay home. If you don't train much, they're an easy way to meet our community without having to keep up with anyone in a class. If you have a health condition, or you're pregnant, check with your doctor before heat or cold exposure, and tell the host before you start.

Recovery for teams

Teams can get this too. Our corporate wellness days can bring restorative experiences to a workplace, from massages to mindfulness sessions. If you're planning something for a team, read our ideas for wellness events for employees.

Pair it with something outdoors

A good week, for a lot of people, looks something like this: one hard session, one easy outdoor class, one recovery night. If you want the outdoor part, look at our outdoor Pilates and yoga events.
